Durrus Cheese

Mother and daughter team Jeffa Gill and Sarah Hennessy use age old traditional skills to create a unique washed rind cheese that is very much linked to the land, subtly capturing variations of season in its flavour.

In 1979, Jeffa Gill began making cheese for her family using the milk from her small herd of dairy cows in the upland townland of Coomkeen near Durrus village in West Cork. Her earliest customers were local chefs and SuperValu store owners who recognised the merit of a locally produced farmhouse cheese. Now, more than 40 years later the family business has grown to employ a small dedicated team to produce award winning cheese on the original family farm.

Durrus Cheeses can be found on good cheese counters and menus across Ireland as well as the UK and specialist shops in the USA.

The classic Durrus Cheese has a fruity sometimes earthy flavour and rich lingering aftertaste. The multi award winning Durrus Óg is a younger cheese, with a thin slightly pinkish rind and a mild, creamy flavour.  Most recent awards for the team at Durrus Cheese are Gold, Artisan Cheese Awards 2023 and Silver, Blas na hEireann 2022.
